چکیده

Abstract. Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) represent a rare subset of aerosol that initiate cloud droplet freezing at temperatures above the homogenous point water (−38 ∘C). Considering ocean covers 71 % Earth's surface and represents large potential source INPs, it is imperative identities, properties relative emissions INPs become better understood. However, specific underlying drivers marine INP remain largely unknown due to limited observations challenges associated with isolating INPs. By generating isolated nascent sea spray (SSA) over range biological conditions, mesocosm studies have shown microbes can contribute Here, we identify 14 (30 %) cultivable halotolerant ice-nucleating fungi among 47 total isolates recovered from precipitation samples collected in coastal air southern California. (IN) were nucleated ice extremely warm moderate (−2.3 −18 While some Gammaproteobacteria are known nucleate as high −2 ∘C, Brevibacterium sp. first Actinobacteria found be capable nucleation relatively temperature Air mass trajectory analysis demonstrates sources dominant during all sampling periods, phylogenetic indicates least 2 IN closely related taxa. Moreover, results cell-washing experiments demonstrate most maintained activity absence nutrients cell growth media. This study supports previous implicated additionally links between precipitation, microbes.

Reduction of insect cold-hardiness using ice-nucleating active fungi and surfactants

The supercooling point (SCP) of an insect model, the lady beetle Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Menéville (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae) was markedly elevated by treatment with aqueous suspensions of the filamentous, ice nucleation active (INA) fungi Fusarium avenaceum and slightly elevated by Fusarium acuminatum. Addition of the surfactant Tween 80 to the fungal suspensions further reduced the supe...

Rainfall drives atmospheric ice-nucleating particles in the coastal climate of southern Norway

Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) active at modest supercooling (e.g. −8 C; INP−8) can transform clouds from liquid to mixed phase, even at very small number concentrations (< 10 m−3). Over the course of 15 months, we found very similar patterns in weekly concentrations of INP−8 in PM10 (median= 1.7 m−3, maximum= 10.1 m−3) and weekly amounts of rainfall (median= 28 mm, maximum= 153 mm) at Birkene...

Ice-nucleating bacteria control the order and dynamics of interfacial water

Ice-nucleating organisms play important roles in the environment. With their ability to induce ice formation at temperatures just below the ice melting point, bacteria such as Pseudomonas syringae attack plants through frost damage using specialized ice-nucleating proteins. Besides the impact on agriculture and microbial ecology, airborne P. syringae can affect atmospheric glaciation processes,...

Quorum quenching in cultivable bacteria from dense marine coastal microbial communities.

Acylhomoserine lactone (AHLs)-mediated quorum-sensing (QS) processes seem to be common in the marine environment and among marine pathogenic bacteria, but no data are available on the prevalence of bacteria capable of interfering with QS in the sea, a process that has been generally termed 'quorum quenching' (QQ). One hundred and sixty-six strains isolated from different marine dense microbial ...

Topical application of ice-nucleating-active bacteria decreases insect cold tolerance.

The majority of overwintering insects avoid lethal freezing by lowering the temperature at which ice spontaneously nucleates within their body fluids. We examined the effect of ice-nucleating-active bacteria on the cold-hardiness of the lady beetle, Hippodamia convergens, a freeze-intolerant species that overwinters by supercooling to ca. -16 degrees C. Topical application of the ice-nucleating...
